Frequently Asked Questions

What do I take on a dig?

An old screwdriver to help remove the fossils and a bag to hold them in.
Dress appropriately for the weather consider sun block & bug repellent.
For more info see the Tools section under the Classroom page.

What are some hazards to watch out for on digs?

The first of the hazards are Scorpions, Spiders and Snakes they are found under
rocks and in burrows that they use for shelter.  One must be alert when turning
over stones.  Sunburn and heat stroke are more likely to harm the weekend
digger than all the preceding hazards combined.  Sun block, hats, protective
footwear and generous quantities of water will go a long way in preventing these
problems.  I always take a good first aid kit on all my outings as well.

How do I clean my fossils?

The Tools used differ depending on the hardness of the material. Water and an
old toothbrush will clean off most of the softer sediment. For more information
see thePreparation section under the Classroom page.

How do I find a fossil site?

Local rock & mineral shops they should know the regional geology. They will probably know the             best fossil sites. Also the area school’s geology dept & clubs can be most helpful.
